Following Your Surgery

Discharge Procedures

You will remain in the recovery area under observation following your surgery. Depending on the procedure and type of anesthesia, most patients are discharged within 15 – 60 minutes after surgery.

A nurse will review the discharge plans with you and your responsible caregiver for your post-operative care. We will provide a written copy of the discharge instructions which includes items such as: physical and activity restrictions, if any; information regarding medication you are to take after discharge; and other special instructions that your doctor wishes you to have. If you have any questions or concerns after your discharge, please contact your physician for further instruction.

A nurse from the surgery center will call you at home the day following your procedure to see how you are doing. If you have a procedure on Friday you will be called the following Monday. It is important for us to know how you are feeling and progressing after your procedure.

Points to Remember
  1. Dietary restrictions are lifted.
  2. No driving for 24 hours.
  3. No alcohol consumption for 24 hours.
  4. Do not sign any important papers or make significant decisions for 24 hours.
  5. Medications can be resumed.
  6. Take Tylenol for any eye discomfort even if pain is minimal. If your pain is not relieved, call your surgeon's office.
  7. You may resume normal (non-strenuous activity).
  8. Most surgeons recommend no heavy lifting (>10 lbs.) for at least one week. Discuss limitations with surgeon.
  9. Follow your surgeon's instructions & scheduling regarding the use of your eye drop medications.
  10. If you are sent home with an eye patch, you will be given specific instructions as to when to discontinue its use during the day.
  11. Wear your eye shield when sleeping (night or nap) to prevent accidental rubbing.
  12. Have a responsible adult available to you for 24 hours.

Please bring your eye kit and eye drops to the follow up appointment with your surgeon.

One to two business days after your surgery, a nurse from our surgery center will call to check on your progress and answer any questions you might have.
